Carl had had it.  He was taking the best memories he had of the past, folding them in velvet inside his heart and mind, and leaving the slimy muck and debris behind.  It would be disrespectful to his personal history to not cherish the wondrous moments of the past.  To disregard those gifts would be to blight the well-wishes of the universe. No, he would sift the gold from the riffraff and remain open to the sparkles of the future.
