Just like Annie Lennox's performance of "I Put A Spell On You" at the 2015 Grammy's, I am MESMERIZED by this incredible, incendiary, delivery on The Voice tonight of the "House of the Rising Sun" by Kimberly Nichole. When she screams out, "Moooootherrrrrrrrr..." at 0:57, I literally cried. Incredible, incredible, so incredible. She owned the entire night. Amazing.
One more of my favorites, who unfortunately is no longer on the show, is Sarah Potenza singing "Wasted Love." Can you tell I'm infatuated with The Voice?
HBO has been rerunning, "Walk the Line" this past week. That movie is so fantastic--I had forgotten how much so. It's one of those (like "The Godfather") that once you start watching, you can't pull yourself away from it. I always was amazed that Joaquin Phoenix didn't receive the Academy Award for his incredible portrayal.
Anyway, I needed some Johnny today...something weird is happening in the atmosphere. We're on the precipice of both a new moon and a looming snowstorm. I have an obligation that I don't want to do, and I feel out-of-sorts. Mother Nature, heavy with a still grayness, aligning with cosmic duty is causing me unrest. I was going to draw that pic. of Johnny giving the finger to the camera, but I'm kind of tired of being misinterpreted so I didn't. I like this one though. I don't know if you can see it, but I ran scratches through the painting to give it a little edge--or maybe it was just to reflect my edginess.
Angling Cash
Johnny Cash - I Walk The Line 1958
And P.S., here's one of the best performances on the fall 2014 run of "The Voice." Craig Wayne Boyd doing his version of Cash's classic.
In the spirit of the world's obsession with reality t.v., I invite you to participate in figuring out what is occurring in this painting. Is our subject:
1) Finding it hard to wake up?
2) Performing a form of interpretive, modern dance?
3) Shielding her eyes at her uneven make-up application?
4) Looking at the mustard stain on the back of her strapless gown?
5) Realizing that her new deodorant is sorely amiss?
Aha! ha! ha! I could create a story for each, but I'll let you do that, dear, interactive reader.
Maybe this will help. Here's the music I was listening to while I drew and painted:
1) Jack White: "Love Interruption" in honor of that 22-year-old/Pittsburgh Apple employee/fabulously wonderful nerdy-glass wearing/last singer on "The Voice" tonight. Loved him! What! Yes, it's true--I was watching reality t.v. And you know what? I just want to be outside at this concert, smelling someone's exhaled cigarette smoke, or some kind of smoke, on the cold air. (-;
