Falsies Forever

I'm posting my creations a bit out of order.  This one was from last month,  but I just wasn't posting to my blog for awhile.  Anyway, it's just a few weeks old.  I thought she was humorous. (-;

Phyllis D's Pearly Whites

I had an art show today, and can I be honest?  I wasn't looking forward to it.  I knew it wasn't the right venue for me.  It was more a craft fair, and I can't compete in price with low-ticket items when I'm making original art that takes me hours, days, months to complete.  Anyway, I woke up at 1 a.m. and tossed and turned for an hour until I got up and painted this one.

O.k., I worked on it BEFORE I went to bed and then finished it in those wee hours.  It was a rough day and included two losses that I just cannot write about here.  Some things are too close to the heart, no?

Suffice it to say, I am drinking a Spanish wine as I type this and will be going to bed early.  I was also right about that craft fair, by the way.  But I did get a wonderful compliment towards the end of it which bolstered my artistic spirit.  My eyes feel heavy right now, unlike this lady's below.  Let's just focus on her joy, shall we?

Side-Glance

I had the urge to draw a little something before I went to bed Sunday.  I think it was my way of not letting the weekend go quite yet.  Of course, I ended up staying up too late and started Monday with my usual exhaustion.  What's a girl driven to draw to do?  Just draw, I guess...and be tired. Red Dot

Hmm.  Still using my phone to take pictures, putting into Instagram and posting to Facebook and then snipping onto my hard drive and then reposting to my blog.  Gotta get that camera working correctly!  I humbly say, I think my art work isn't showing off to the best of its ability with my roundabout posting approach.  I'll get back to it.  Although, I do notice I have a lot less hits from a certain area in the world now that my images aren't as sharp as the camera would present... hmm.

Anyway, this portrait actually has a much more vibrant, apple green in it than this picture would suggest, and I think a lot more detail.  Nevertheless, here is "Red Dot" as I can best represent her at the moment.

She Had So Many Ideas Her Face Exploded SOLD

She Had So Many Ideas Her Face Exploded

Watercolor, acrylic, wire, beads, glitter, string, ink, vine charcoal, lots of time
11" x 14"

This chiquita has been hanging around for months, and I mean about 7.  I liked her...she was pretty, her eyes turned out well I thought.  But...I was just bored with her.  I would pick up the portrait, stare at it and think, what else can I do?

Finally after about a month, I tore her apart.  My original thought was how cheeks break open from holding in so many ideas.  What could I do with that?  My husband asked me what had happened.  I said nothing, I tore her apart on purpose.  About 2 months ago I had all the painting done, but I knew I wanting to include some exploding brain matter, too.  Listen, it's the most lovely of brain matter and cosmos-like explosion of ideas, don't you think? ha!

Blah, blah.  I finally finished her tonight while I watched for the third time the Seattle episode (7) of the "Foo Fighters:  Sonic Highways" on HBO (Each episode premieres on Friday night...one more to go). Is anyone else watching this FANTASTIC rock journey across America?  Please say you are!  Anyway, I found a lot of inspiration in tonight's episode.  To keep going even if there "isn't a scene" where you live.  Make your own scene.  Do it even if you think your stuff sucks.  Actually, I've read that before about late '80's/very early '90's Seattle--in books, in articles, in interview clips.  It's always good to hear it otra vez, though, isn't it?  You have to be reminded of these things again and again and again.  Hear it in a new context. You have to be reminded.  You have to remind yourself.  Keep going.  Let your face explode with ideas, and then believe in them.

Some detail:

Pretty girl broken...she had to be to become more beautiful. (-;

Here's a great article from The New York Times on the "Sonic Highways" series if I haven't enticed you to turn in: .Rock Star on a Quest for Heroes.

Here's also Ben Gibbard from "Death Cab for Cutie" in a Rolling Stone interview talking about his appearance in the Seattle episode:  Ben Gibbard.

Here's a former post of mine about Kurt Cobain and innocence (if you're interested):  Day 58: Violets, Tootsie Pops and Innocence

Detached Retina

Estelle felt herself becoming detached from her retina.

(The feeling was mutual.)

Day 310. I Lost A Piece of My Mind and You Saw It on My Face

Driving to work this a.m., I was listening to Grace Potter and the Nocturnals' self-titled CD from 2010.  As I was turning into the parking lot "Goodbye Kiss" started to play, and when I listened to that first line, I thought, Hmm, that would be a good painting for October 31st!

Here you have it.  I hope you're having a great Halloween you little ghosts and goblins! (-;

I Lost A Piece of My Mind, and You Saw It on My Face

OH! SERIOUSLY, peeps!  I just went to YouTube to get you a clip of the tune, of which there are many, but here's one with this song set to them dressed up in Halloween costumes.  How serendipitous is that?!

P.S. Twelve thousand years ago when I started this blog--o.k., last November, I posted a clip of Grace Potter and the Nocturnals singing Gillian Welch's, "Elvis Presley Blues."  It's so phenomenal that I'm just going to post it here again.  I love it!

"Goodbye Kiss" is off this album if you don't have it, you should. (-:

Day 252. A Man's Face in Charcoal

Just drawing in charcoal with an acrylic wash in the background and listening to one of the most beautiful, mysterious, powerful soundtracks from the movie, "The Insider."  (Not to mention an incredible movie with Russell Crowe and Al Pacino.)  My favorite is the last track, "Meltdown," by Lisa Gerrard and Pieter Bourke.  Gorgeous music, cool night breeze, the charcoal, rough and smooth against the grain of the paper, all senses pulling you into a floating meditation.

Day 243. She Knew Her Face Said Crankerella

The man belched at the bar, and she could feel her forehead furrow.  She knew that her face said, "Crankerella," but truly, are there no manners left?

Her distaste grew, but now she turned it upon herself.  There was something, about this neanderthal...something sexy...  Ugh!  She could feel herself falling for the wrong man again.

Day 202. Face in Yellow and Pink

Face in Yellow and Pink

This actually has a yellow glitter scattered throughout the face, but my camera didn't pick it up.
